I was watching
Brand X with Russell Brand an episode called Anarchy & World Peace. They were discussing the
shooting in Aurora with a member of the audience
George Tita a professor of criminology and
Kurt Sutter from
Sons of Anarchy.
The professor George Tita pointed out that we are living in the safest time in decades and what happened in Aurora was an outlier. Kurt Sutter discounted George Tita's comments as academic.
I find Kurt Sutter's comment sad, but typical. Tita is right, the tragic events in Aurora are an outlier. This event is being used to spread fear by the right, the left, and the media, all for the own purposes.
Too often it seems that we write our laws and policies based on extreme events that rarely happen. This may make our world safer but it also makes it less interesting. More importantly it makes us less resilient.
